Diagnosed with systemic Lupus on July 9, 2011, Altonia founded The Lupie Chick Project, Inc. The Lupie Chick Project is a charitable organization dedicated to raising Lupus awareness through advocacy, fundraising, and education. In May 2015 The Lupie Chick Project kicked off its annual #SelfiesForLupus [#Selfies4Lupus] social media campaign sponsored by Walgreens. Selfies for Lupus gives everyone an opportunity to easily get involved in raising awareness of Lupus by raising their right hand in the shape of an “L”, snapping a selfie, and posting on social media. As of January 2018, Altonia has collected more than 5k selfies.
